My Story

Ok. If you’re expecting to hear a long, drawn-out saga of my many years in MLM misery, you’re going to be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been through all the stuff most of you have been through, or have experienced in trying to make money in network marketing. But my story is more hops than long painful strides.

Like many of you, I have done the meetings, drained my social circle pitching my “dream” opportunity to friends and co-workers. I’ve done the flyer thing and got lots of phone calls from suddenly uninterested parties the minute I woefully tried to avoid answering the “is this one of those pyramid schemes” question.

Then I said “screw it,” and began placing classified ads on the newspapers. Too bad it cost an arm and leg. So then, since I am designer by trade, I decided to brand myself by producing my own Flash presentation of my business opportunity.  I would then burn it on CD-Rom and mail out or hand out to prospects. And then I would get asked “is this MLM?” And that would be the end of that.

So, when none of that worked, I did what many in this position do. I tried a different company thinking the product or the compensation plan will surely get people knocking down my door. I mean, how could they not, right?

Well, I don’t have patience for What’s Not Working Now, so ultimately I quit after three failed attempts, three network marketing companies, and lots of product I had no use for. And the sweet and sour taste in my mouth kept me out of network marketing for a long time.

I say sweet and sour because although I wanted nothing to do with the madness that was trying to promote this business and convince people that it wasn’t a scam, I have always believed in the business model itself. I always felt that one day I would find the perfect company with the perfect product that everyone would want without question and make tons of residual cash. After all, that was the problem, right? Who really wants to shop for groceries online? No wonder I failed!

Right.

Well, that company and that product came along one day about 3 years ago. And the events that led up to it and followed changed my life and my outlook forever. You see, 3 years ago I left a very successful advertising career to make my fortune in real estate investing. I made some quick easy money my first three months, but like so many people, I got in at the peak of the real estate boom.

Three foreclosures later, my wife and I filed for bankruptcy. We had no income coming in whatsoever, and oh, we’d just found out we had a little too much fun with a steak and wine dinner one weekend and our first child was on the way.

Around that time, in the most random fashion, I got a call from my step-mom’s nephew whom I hadn’t spoken to in years. He had this great nutritional product that was revolutionizing the vitamin industry and I knew instantly by his approach that this was MLM. But with nothing else cooking, I looked into it. And that became the turning point.

Not because I really liked the product and thought I had finally found the “It” opportunity. In fact, I never joined the company when it was all said and done. What did happen was that I stumbled on this thing called attraction marketing. And given my marketing and advertising background, the light went off, and I was instantly hooked.

Still, with a baby on the way, I played it safe and got back into advertising so I could at least feel better about having medical insurance and a predictable income. Then, less than two years later I got the hook. And that became the last straw. I was unemployed again, with no income and concerned for the well being of my family and I.

At that point, I vowed never to allow that to happen again. And that circumstance became my personal leverage and my catalyst. That was the fuel that finally brought my “reasons why” to life and propelled me to chase my dreams.

After thousands of dollars and countless hours spent on training, and consulting with mentors, I know run my network marketing and internet marketing business online full time. And for those of you who don’t think you can do it too, I have only this to say:

Yes you can. You just have to find your story. Your why. Your catalyst.

All the tools, all the resources and answers are out there. And they will work magic when you decide it’s your time to shine. But not before then. In the meantime, bookmark this blog and feel free to look over my shoulder as I share what I’m up to, what’s working for me, what’s not, or even what I’m totally jacking up. After all, making mistakes is a great way to learn how to do it right.
